Function & Logic

What does SubNow do?

SubNow helps coaches plan and execute player substitutions so players get their fair share of time on the field. SubNow offers practical substitution plans for different game formats and number of substitutes. SubNow Pro includes position management so that coaches can plan the positions players will substitute with.

SubNow does not currently provide functionality to track game scores or players’ statistics. SubNow focusses on preparing and executing fair player substitution plans, then adapting the plan when unexpected events take place.

How do I use SubNow?

Install SubNow from the App Store or Google Play then follow these simple steps:

  1. Sign up for 30 Day Free Trial on a Pro or Basic Plan.
  2. Create a team.
  3. Specify the team settings: sport, game format, duration and breaks (halves, quarters).
  4. Add your players.
  5. Mark any players absent then set your starting Team Lineup (substitution order, who starts on bench, goalkeeper for first and second half).
  6. Select the number of subs per rotation and the time between rotations. (Only practical and fair options will be available)
  7. If you have selected Positions in your Team Settings, go to the Positions screen and move players to different positions on the field to set your run-on side formation.
  8. Preview the player positions after each substitution and swap player run-on positions where desired. (This does not change the game time per player).
  9. View the final substitution Plan which displays the Player On / Player Off pairings for each substitution, along with the time each substitution is scheduled to be made.
  10. Step through the substitution plan to preview the 'instructions.'
  11. Print the substitution plan if you would like a step-by-step paper version.
  12. Press Play Game to move to the game screen.

Your substitution plan is ready for game day!

Press Play to start the game when the ref blows the whistle – and simply follow the substitution instructions when the substitution SubNow alert sounds!

Can I customise by position locations on the field?

Yes! If you have the Pro version, you can change the default position locations when you first enter the Positions screen. Once the position locations are set you can specify which of the on-field players start in each position. The field has a 7 x 7 grid which provides flexibility for placing a position format that the coach or playing format dictates. Note that a substitution plan can only have one position format.

What if I don’t want to rotate all my subs at each rotation?

In the substitution settings, specify the number of players you want to substitute each time. If you have 5 players on the bench, you may only want to substitute two players each time, then you would select ‘2’ in the Subs per Rotation field. Only options that result in a practical and fair rotation plan will be available.

What rules does SubNow use to calculate the game time?

SubNow looks at the game duration, number of players, whether there is a goalkeeper and the number of substitutes for the game. SubNow then retrieves a default time between rotations and number of subs per substitution that gives a practical rotation plan. The game time per player is then calculated based on their position in the lineup. In some scenarios there will be other options available for the time between rotations and number of subs per substitution. Note that only practical options are offered. For example, SubNow won’t give you a plan that has you making a substitution 1 minute before half-time. It also won’t give you a plan that requires you to make 4 substitutions every 2 minutes in a 40 minute match. Generally time between rotations are set to allow a substitution at the breaks.

Scenarios of game duration, on-field players, breaks and goal keeper cover the common formats for the supported sports, namely Football/Soccer, Futsal, Minkey/Mini Hockey, Basketball and Touch Football.

If a format you require is not supported please contact us and request it to be added.

Can I use other programs or apps on my device during a game?

Yes. The SubNow game clock continues when SubNow is not the active app.

What happens if a player is injured or drops out of the game partway through?

You move the player from the field onto the bench ie. replace the injured player with one of the subs from the bench, then move the injured player to Not Playing. The app will adjust the substitution plan which will mean different players are rotating/subbing each time, but the app will not change the time between substitutions.

What happens if a player arrives late?

You could start the player on the bench and then hope they show up before they are due to run on…. OR If you have adjusted your plan to identify this player as Not Playing, and this player shows up partway through the game, SubNow allows you to update them from Not Playing to on the bench. The app will adjust the substitution plan which will mean different players are rotating/subbing each time, but the app will not change the time between substitutions.

What if I want my goalkeeper to rotate like any other player during the game?

SubNow supports planned goalkeeper changes at half time and unplanned changes at any time during the game. Contact us if you would like a new format added that ignores the special status of a goalkeeper and treats the position of goalkeeper like any other on the field. The immediate workaround is to choose a game format with one additional player and then put a dummy player in goal. Set your formation to have an on-field player located near the goal. This position will hold the player currently in goal.

How do I plan for a different goalkeeper for the second half?

The first thing to note is that the G2 icon (a red circle with G2 in the middle) identifies the player who will be the goalkeeper for the second half. If you have the same player playing in the goalkeeper position for the whole game (ie. you are not swapping goalkeepers at half time), in the Team Lineup screen, the G2 icon should be against the player who is identified as the Goalkeeper. If you are swapping goalkeepers at halftime, in the Team Lineup screen, move the G2 icon to the player who will be the goalkeeper for the second half. Do this using a single tap on the left of the player name. The current version of the app only allows goalkeeper swaps at halftime.

Can I save team player and game settings?

Yes. Team players and the previous game settings are saved on your device and will be loaded when you select that team. The player line-up and status from the end of the previous game is saved. This ensures that by default, players take turns at being on the bench at the start of each game.

How can I watch the game and not miss a substitution?

One minute prior to the next substitution window, an audible alert will sound and a “Prepare Subs’ notification will be sent to your phone.

How can I record more information about a player?

SubNow has chosen not to allow personal or other information to be stored against players for privacy purposes given the child focussed use of this app.
